The Whistle Stop Tour

Following the same route that Abraham Lincoln rode 150 years ago, President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Dr. Jill Biden made their way to the inauguration on a whistle stop train tour that wove its way from Philadelphia through Delaware and Maryland on its way to Washington.

“To the children who hear the whistle of the train and dream of a better life — that’s who we’re fighting for. That’s who needs change,” President Obama said at one stop along the way. “And those are the stories that we will gather with us to Washington.”

…e ao ver Obama jurar solenemente ao aceitar o cargo de presidentos dos EUA, senti um arrepio. O mesmo que me lembro de ter sentido há muitos anos atrás quado cairam os muros de Berlim. Senti uma vez mais que estava a ver uma página da história a ser escrita. E que página! Um negro, no mais alto posto do mais poderoso país do mundo. Um negro, que veio de uma família humilde. Um filho de gente simples, que vê o mundo, que fala com o mundo, como um de nós. Senti um arrepio, de esperança, suponho. Esperança que um dia, os filhos de gente como eu possam tomar o futuro do mundo nas suas mãos e fazer dele um sítio mais justo. É a minha esperança de estarmos a entrar numa nova era, num tempo de mudança, num tempo onde todos têm um lugar e não são catalogados e colocados nas prateleiras das diferenças de cor, sexo, cor política, religião ou opção [correcção: orientação] sexual.

Penso que hoje, um pouco por todo o mundo, renasceu uma réstia de esperança…

*e sim, estou mesmo contente com a vitória de Obama. Sinto mesmo que hoje se fez história. Amanhã logo se vê. Mas a esperança, essa, hoje, abriu uma brecha na parede cinzenta dos dias.
